Chapter Fourteen

Darien landed a sharp blow on my rib cage, jolting me so that the flow of green energy from my palm abruptly stopped. I gritted my teeth and tried to regain my concentration, not wanting to let him deter me from my goal. The wooden dummy in front of me was half broken, splinters sticking out at odd angles from its torso; the lesson would only end if I managed to direct my powers enough to break it completely.

“Focus, Thea. You can’t let yourself get distracted.”

Another kick found its way to my lower back, and I stumbled forward, the magic I had managed to gather in my palm extinguishing. Letting out a huff, I dodged Darien’s next blow and urged myself to concentrate, ignoring the sweat dripping down my brow and into my eyes. Icy needles stabbed their way through my wrist, and I hissed, but I didn’t stop trying to force magic from my body toward the wooden figure.

The successful sound of cracking and splintering met my ears as I managed to shoot another beam straight ahead, ducking out of the way of Darien’s swinging fist. My magic sputtered to a stop when I moved, and it took another round of concentration to bring the green glow back to my palm.

A moment after I had the green light focused and ready to fire, Darien barreled into me, sending me flying. I hit the practice mats with a thud, all of the fight leaving my body. Pain was shooting up my wrist that had nothing to do with the blows Darien was landing on me, and I elected to lay on my back, staring up at the ceiling and questioning the direction of my life.

“Get up, Thea. You can’t take a power nap during a real fight.” Darien chided me, crossing the floor to stand over me, hands on hips. He didn’t even look slightly out of breath; not a hair was displaced on his handsome head.

Damn him.

“I’m done.” I didn’t move from my position, arms splayed out at my sides, chest heaving with exertion. “I can’t keep up.”

“You have to keep up.” Darien frowned at me. “If you don’t learn how to use your powers, how are you going to protect yourself from attack?”

“So you do think I’m going to be attacked again?” I propped myself up on my elbows, scrutinizing Darien’s response.

Ever since the demon attack in the Town of the Veil a few weeks ago, I’d been vying for information on the demons and why they were attacking humans. It’d been hard work, but I’d managed to get Darien to slip up a few times so far. It was becoming more and more clear to me that something big was going on with the demons, Liam and Darien knew something about it, and both of them were intent on keeping secrets despite Liam’s offer to keep me updated.

“I didn’t say that.” He dismissed me, reaching out a hand for me to take. I ignored it. “All
